The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game that requires a significant amount of skill and psychology. There are a number of different variations on the game, but they all share a few basic features.

A poker hand consists of five cards and can be of any rank. The value of the hand is inversely proportional to its mathematical frequency; therefore, the more rare a combination of cards, the higher the hand rank. Players can choose to bet that they have the best hand, which forces other players to call (match) or fold. Players can also bluff, betting that they have a superior hand when in fact they do not.

It is important to pay close attention to your opponents. This is often referred to as reading other players and it is a critical part of the game. A large portion of poker reads come not from subtle physical poker tells (such as scratching your nose or playing nervously with your chips) but rather from patterns. If a player bets frequently then you can usually assume they are holding some pretty crappy cards. If a player only calls occasionally then they are probably holding a few decent cards.

In most poker games there are one or more forced bets, usually an ante and blind bet. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals them to the players, starting with the player on his left. There are then a series of betting intervals, with each player having the opportunity to bet or check. Once the betting is complete a third card is dealt to the table that anyone can use, this is called the flop.
